TikTok messages: what works, and where

TikTok lets businesses send automatic messages and run message campaigns, with more limits than Meta.

Who can use it

• A TikTok Business Account. Personal and creator accounts cannot. Switch in the TikTok app if needed.
• TikTok's approval of CommentGate. TikTok reviews every app before it can message for businesses. Until that review is done, Setup says "TikTok is still reviewing CommentGate for messages".
• Not accounts created in the EU, the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. TikTok does not offer business messaging there at all.
• Messages allowed when you connected. If Setup asks you to, reconnect TikTok on Accounts and allow messages.

Set it up

1. Open Setup and scroll to When someone messages you on TikTok.
2. Under Where this account was created, choose the country. It decides what TikTok allows.
3. Turn on what you want from the list below.

• Welcome message: sent when someone starts a chat with you.
• Suggested questions: up to 3 questions shown at the start of a chat. A tap sends your answer.
• New follower message: sent when someone follows you, at most once a day. Write {s_nickname} for their name. TikTok only offers it on some accounts.

TikTok sends these itself and checks each one before it goes live, so each shows whether it is approved, in review or rejected.

In the TikTok app, let everyone message the account (Settings and privacy, Privacy, Direct messages). Otherwise new messages wait as requests until you accept them.

Limits

• You can only message someone after they message you. TikTok does not let businesses message people who only commented.
• Up to 10 messages in the 48 hours after their last message, then up to 3 more until they write again.
• Buttons in TikTok messages cannot open links. Put the link in the message text.

Reading TikTok chats

TikTok chats show in Messages with your other conversations, and you can answer them there. Above the reply box, Messages says when TikTok's limit is close, for example "TikTok allows 2 more messages in this chat until they write again". The people you talk to also appear in People.
