Tracked links and recording sales
Every link a campaign sends in a DM counts its clicks. Report the sales those clicks lead to, and the revenue shows on the campaign, the step and the lead.
Updated
Every link in a campaign DM is a tracked link: a button set to Opens a link, and any web address you type into the message text. It opens your page as normal, and on the way it counts the click and tags the visit, so you can see which campaign, step and comment led to a sale.
A web address you type into the message is sent as a short link that counts clicks, so people see that short link in the message. Links inside an approved WhatsApp template are sent as they are and not counted, because a template cannot change after WhatsApp approves it.
What happens when someone taps a link
- The click is counted on the step and the campaign. Clicks can take up to about half an hour to appear.
- Your page opens with UTM parameters added, so your analytics can tell these visits apart: utm_source is the platform (for example instagram), utm_medium is social_dm, utm_campaign is the campaign's name in short form (Fall Trail Sale becomes fall-trail-sale), and utm_content tells each message apart. Parameters already on your link are kept.
- A click id is added as cg_click. This is what ties a sale back to the click.
A They clicked the link branch uses these clicks too, so a campaign can remind only people who did not click.
Record sales
Clicks count on their own. Sales need your store to tell CommentGate about them, using the cg_click value from the visit:
- With Zapier or Make: save the cg_click value with the order (most stores can keep landing page parameters on the order), then use the Record a Sale action with the Click ID, the Order value and the currency. For example, a Zap that runs on each new order in your store. If Meta Events Manager is connected, also fill in Buyer browser (user agent) from the order: without it the sale counts here but does not reach Meta. See Connect Zapier and Make.
- With your own developer: the same, from your store's code. See the developer docs.
Reporting the same click again replaces its value and never adds to it, so a retried Zap does not count a sale twice. Values are in USD unless you send another currency.
Where sales show
- Campaigns: the Sales total on each campaign.
- The board: Converted on the step whose link was clicked, and on each path of an A/B split.
- Leads: the revenue next to the lead the sale came from.
- Meta Events Manager, if connected: see Send sales and leads to Meta.
If Sales stay at $0 while clicks come in, your store is not reporting sales yet.
